En noviembre del 2019, participamos en un foro de discusión que inició con la presentación del status quo de las ciudades de América Latina. Después de haber navegado por las características principales que las definen, entre ellas la fragmentación urbana, la segregación social y la violencia, se abrió el micrófono al público con la siguiente interrogativa inspirada en las palabras de Harvey: ¿Qué tipo de ciudad queremos y cómo la vamos a construir?
Como era de esperarse, esta interrogativa generó una larga discusión en la que se desplegaron distintas opiniones y visiones. Sin embargo, una de ellas llamó mucho nuestra atención, porque el comentario provenía de una voz resignada que nos decía que «el sistema está ahí y no podemos vencerlo, así que hagamos lo que podamos con lo que tenemos». Con indignación a esta aseveración, preguntó una persona que si estábamos dispuestos a «entregarle las llaves de nuestra vida a alguien más, dejar de luchar por lo que creemos y conformarnos con eso».
Estas últimas palabras marcaron nuestras vidas y nos motivaron a iniciar esta plataforma, porque nosotras no estamos dispuestas a entregar la llave de nuestras vidas a los poderes fácticos que se han dado a la tarea de crear ciudades fragmentadas, a las que no todos tienen los mismos derechos de acceder y mucho menos de transformar. No estamos dispuestas a quedarnos de brazos cruzados mientras los intereses de una minoría se satisfacen a costa del agotamiento de los recursos naturales del planeta y de la extinción de miles de especies al año [1] . No estamos dispuestas a conformarnos con el status quo y no admitir nuestra responsabilidad como arquitectas y urbanistas en la exacerbación del cambio climático que afecta miles de vidas humanas que están sufriendo las devastadoras consecuencias. En otras palabras, nosotras no estamos dispuestas a no cuestionar el status quo.
Questioning the status quo

In November 2019, we participated in a discussion forum that started with the presentation of the status quo of Latin American cities. After navigating through the main characteristics which define them, amongst them urban fragmentation, social segregation and violence, the microphone was opened to the public with the following interrogative inspired in Harvey´s words: What kind of city do we want and how are we going to build it?
As was to be expected, this interrogative started a long discussion in which several opinions and visions unfolded. However, one of them caught our attention because the comment came from a blighted voice that told us that “the system is there and we cannot do anything to defeat it, so we should do what we can with what we have”. With indignation towards such an asseveration, a person asked if we were willing to “turn over the keys to our lives to someone else, to stop fighting for what we believe in and to be content with that.”
These last words marked our lives and motivated us to start this platform, because we are not willing to give up the keys of our lives to de facto powers that have created fragmented cities to which not everyone has the right to access, less alone transform. We are not willing to stay with our arms crossed while the interests of a few are satisfied at the expense of the degradation of the natural resources of our planet and of the daily extinction of thousands of species [1] . We are not willing to conform with the status quo and not admit our responsibility as architects and urbanists in the exacerbation of the climate change that affects thousands of human lives that suffer its devastating effects. In other words, we are not willing to not question the status quo.
